Fantasy Football Mailbag - Week 13

November 26th, 2008

So the playoff spot is 99% clinched. My oppeonent this week would need to beat me by 80 pts to get ahead of me. Anyways……. time to gear up for the final stretch!
1. I now have Rivers and Matt Ryan going ahead. week 16 SD faced TB and ATL faces MN. Should I think of picking up Thigpen at all? should I even consider 3QBs?? or just go with Matt Ryan that week?
2. Addai, Forte, Hightower and Dunn going ahead. P Thomas, D Ward and Leon are out there. Forte - must start vs MN?
3. Wayne, White and Plaxico on the squad. Chambers, Gage, Muhsin out there.
4. Winslow and Fasano are scaring me…. but Camarillo just went down so should I gamble with Fasano this week?? Z Miller, J carlson and Heath Miller are out there. tho PIT has brutal matchups.

Yes, pick up Thigpen. His matchup against Miami in week 16 is great and if you get to the finals you could absolutely be playing him over Rivers and definitely Ryan.

Bush is coming back so I wouldn’t put too much stock in Pierre Thomas. I’d pick up Leon first and then Ward. Yeah Forte is pretty much a must start vs. anyone. Especially if you are in PPR league. Also keep an eye on Hightower. If he does nothing Thanksgiving night go ahead and drop him. He won’t have enough value worth to be worth playing in the playoffs.

Remember just because you don’t necessarily need to pick someone up doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. Keeping a player away from another team is just as important. Which is why you should pick up Thigpen immediately.

You probably won’t be playing anyone over Wayne or White. But Gage is worth considering as would Mark Bradley if he is available.

Yeah Winslow is scaring me too. I’m going to be sticking with him in my league unless it starts getting really ugly. He was hurt last week and if he gets healthy he’s much better than any TE you can get off the wire. I would go with Heath though if you are looking for a potential backup. Don’t be scared with the matchups for Pittsburgh. A lot of times when they face a tough defense Roethlisberger looks to him more because the stuff to Ward and Santonio is shut down.

Also I don’t know who your defense is but don’t overlook Seattle in week 15 and SF in week 16. They both play STL in those weeks and we both know what defenses do against STL. If your defense isn’t automatic each week go ahead and stash these teams for those matchups.

Fantasy Football Mailbag - Week 5

October 1st, 2008

Available on the WW are K Walter, M Mohammed, D Mason, B Engram, D Branch, L Moore, A Toomer. Could any one of these be a worthwhile pick up to replace V Jackson?

I’d probably ride out Jackson a bit longer. He hasn’t been too terrible. But from that list I’d look at branch first and then engram if you are set on replacing Jackson.

My RBs are Addai, Forte, Larry Johnson and Chester Taylor. I could pick up McClain for V Jackson and trade him and one of my recievers to a guy who needs RBs but has Jennings as a #3 on his bench. M Bush is out there too.

If you can get that Jennings trade to go through you have to make that trade. Regardless RB depth is always a good thing to have. Vincent Jackson is never going to get you too much from production or trade value but McClain has a ton of potential. So make that McClain pickup for Jackson.

Winslow is on bye… Carlson, Fasano, K Boss, Rosario and Shianco are available…. I just need someone for the bye week and then i could get back to Winslow. Any thoughts?

Carlson against the Giants then Fasano against SD would be the two best options to replace Winslow during his bye.

Fantasy Football Mailbag - Week 2

September 14th, 2008

This week’s mailbag question features a waiver wire no brainer.

Ok, so heres my team:

D Anderson, P Rivers, M Cassel
J Addai, M Forte, L Johnson, C Taylor
R Wayne, Chad 85, Roddy White, J Galloway
K Winslow
A Vinatieri
SD Chargers Def

Another guy in the league just dropped Santonio Holmes for E Royal! Should I pounce on Holmes …. or is there a reason he was dropped that i don’t know about. Is it the tough matchups that PIT has this season… or could it be just a first game disappointment. Just not exactly sure why he could’ve been dropped the 1st week, any ideas on what i should do? He might not be on the waiver wire for too long! (KB)

Add Santonio Holmes immediately. Talk about an overreaction drop. Once Brandon Marshall comes back Royal won’t get the same number of looks. But as for Holmes he is the Steelers main deep threat. I doubt whoever dropped him was looking at the Steelers extremely tough schedule but regardless he is still going to get plenty of looks. Sure he’ll have a few more games like last week but mostly because the Steelers will be dominating the game. Roethlisberger only threw the ball 14 times and completed 13 of them. They controlled the game with Willie Parker and looked mostly over the middle for Heath Miller and Hines Ward. It was just one of those weeks. There is no need to worry about Santonio Holmes going forward.

Not sure how your waiver wire works but you should look to add Santonio Holmes for his nice matchup against the Browns this week. If you were offered Santonio Holmes for Joey Galloway or even Roddy White you would accept that in about a nanosecond. So make this pickup as soon as possible.

Now that I drafted who do you like as immediate waiver wire pickups? (Sean - Jersey City, NJ)

A few names jump to mind. With Chris Brown out for the year in Houston, Steve Slaton moves up the depth chart and has fantasy relevance. The other three guys I’d keep an eye on were mentioned in our sleeper picks. Zach Miller (OAK, TE) might have been drafted in your league but if not and you are scraping the middle tier of TEs keep the trigger finger ready on him. Also Tim Hightower (ARI, RB) and Jason Wright (CLE, RB) are certainly worth a stash on your bench. Especially Hightower, since Edgerrin James is on the decline in Arizona and he should be getting some goal line looks.

Should I start Selvin Young against Oakland or Edgerrin James against SF in week 1?
(Brad - Pittsburgh, PA)

I’m hoping this is not a question about your #1 RB spot. If it is, well, next year stay away from the Iron City while drafting. To answer your question though they both have remarkably similar situations going into the week. Both figure to not get goal line looks and both are going against mediocre defenses. That said Selvin Young is the better bet to break off a long TD run and really deliver something meaningful for you in week 1.

    • Chargers WR Jackson arrested for DUI

Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of drunken driving. Jackson failed sobriety tests shortly after 2 a.m. on Tuesday morning and was taken to the San Diego County jail and released. He was on probation for a previous DUI arrest, according to a Highway Patrol Officer. Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said he was aware of Jackson's situation. "Obviously we're disappointed," Smith said. "We take these issues very seriously. Moving forward, we will monitor the situation and have no further comment." Tue, 6 Jan 2009 15:42:39 EST

    • Harrison gun case still unresolved

A gun owned by Colts WR Marvin Harrison was used in an April shooting, but investigators still can't determine who pulled the trigger, the city's chief prosecutor said Tuesday. Five of the six bullet casings found at the North Philadelphia shooting scene came from Harrison's weapon, but investigators have conflicting witness accounts of who fired it, Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham said. No charges have been filed in the April 28 shooting and the investigation remains open. The victim has sued Harrison and law enforcement will be keeping tabs on that proceeding to see if any new evidence emerges that could help the criminal investigation, Abraham said. • Tomlinson injury his 'toughest' yet

Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson isn't sure if a week's worth of treatment and rest is going to be enough to allow him to play. "I don't know. It's tough," Tomlinson said after the Chargers' light workout on Monday. "This is a tough injury. I would probably venture to say it's probably the toughest of my career. We'll see what happens." Asked about his short-term health one day earlier, Tomlinson said: "I'm worried about my health. I'm very concerned." The Chargers continue to say Tomlinson has a strained groin. Reports surfaced Saturday that Tomlinson has a detached tendon. "It's a strained groin. That's what our medical report is," coach Norv Turner said. "I don't think it's any worse, but it isn't any better." Mon, 5 Jan 2009 19:05:25 EST

    • Big Ben back on the practice field

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger practiced Monday for the first time since sustaining a concussion late in the second quarter of a meaningless 31-0 win over Cleveland on Dec. 28. He has had ongoing headaches, but until Monday didn't pass the memory tests given players who receive a concussion. He took three or four such tests last week. The Steelers host the Chargers in a Divisional Playoff game this week. Mon, 5 Jan 2009 18:53:37 EST

    • Cardinals still unsure about Boldin

Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin has a strained left hamstring, and his status is uncertain for Saturday night's NFC divisional playoff game at Carolina. "We'll see how it goes this week," coach Ken Whisenhunt said at his Monday news conference. Boldin was injured on a 71-yard touchdown pass from Kurt Warner in the second quarter of Arizona's 30-24 Wild Card playoff victory over the Falcons last Saturday. He returned to play one more series, then limped off the field for good. "When you're dealing with hamstrings you just never know," Whisenhunt said. "I've seen guys that have come back and played a couple of days later, I've seen guys who are out three or four weeks." Mon, 5 Jan 2009 18:33:28 EST

    • Harrison named Defensive POY

James Harrison slams down the current version of the Steel Curtain better than any Pittsburgh Steeler, earning him The Associated Press 2008 Defensive Player of the Year award. The linebacker who had a career-high 16 sacks, setting a team record, and led the NFL with a career-high seven forced fumbles, beat Dallas' DeMarcus Ware in balloting by a nationwide panel of 50 sports writers and broadcasters announced Monday. Pittsburgh defense was the league's stingiest in total defense, pass defense and points allowed. Harrison was its main hammer. "That's something that everybody in the league would love to have, to be voted the top player in the league for that year," Harrison said. "In my mind, I think I do -- and it's going to sound boring - what the defense allows me to do and what my teammates allow me to do." Harrison earned 22 votes to 13 for Ware. • Patriots plan to franchise Cassel

The New England Patriots plan to put the franchise tag on quarterback Matt Cassel, according to a published report. Cassel's future hinges heavily on Tom Brady's recovery from a season-ending knee injury in the first game this season. Franchising Cassel would keep him from becoming an unrestricted free agent and give the Patriots an option if they feel Brady might not be ready for the start of the 2009 season. If they're confident that Brady will be ready, they'd be able to trade Cassel. The Patriots' plan for Cassel was first reported by the National Football Post. "It's been talked about quite a bit (publicly)," Patriots spokesman Stacey James said Monday. "We won't be commenting on it until something happens. And if we don't use it (the tag), we probably won't comment." Mon, 5 Jan 2009 15:43:36 EST

    • McNabb piles up yards at Minnesota

Eagles QB Donovan McNabb led his team to a playoff victory Sunday at Minnesota, finishing 23-of-34 passing for 300 yards, one touchdown and one interception. His touchdown came on a 71-yard pass to Brian Westbrook in the fourth quarter. Sun, 4 Jan 2009 23:20:54 EST

    • Jackson makes only one reception

Eagles rookie WR DeSean Jackson caught one pass for 34 yards in Sunday's Wild Card playoff game at Minnesota. He now has two receptions or fewer in four of his last five games. Sun, 4 Jan 2009 23:16:41 EST

    • Taylor gets more touches than usual

Vikings RB Chester Taylor had made more of an impact than usual Sunday in a playoff game against the Eagles, carrying the ball 12 times for 48 yards and catching five passes for 36. The 12 carries represented a season high. Sun, 4 Jan 2009 23:13:06 EST
